Marcio Lopes is a top up and coming talent in Northern Portugal, increasingly recognized internationally. Marcio makes wines in Portugal’s Douro and Vinho Verde regions, and has just started his first project in Spain’s Ribeira Sacra region. Known for an innovative approach combining state of the art techniques with very traditional methods, he is known for complex wines with freshness on the nose and great balance on the palate. In 2020 Marcio received the “Enologo Revelacão do Ano” award (“top up and coming young winemaker”) from Revista Vinhos, the top wine publication in Portugal.

A fine Douro Reserva quality red, a blend of Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, together with a small percentage of old vines field blend. Located on the left bank of the Douro, the vines are protected from intense summer heat and enjoy greater freshness, with a slower and more balanced maturation. The 2019 is particularly fine and aromatic, with the signature freshness of this winemaker. A very good value.

3. Tinto Atlântico 2019 (red)

A very special red wine from Monção/Melgaço, the capital of the white Alvarinho grape in Portugal. It is a very rare red wine from this location, a blend of three local grapes — Cainho Tinto, Pedral, and Alvarelhão — from an old legacy vineyard dating back to the 1930s. This wine represents a deep look into the past of this region, but possibly also its future. Quite light in color, and very fruity and expressive, this wine is best served lightly chilled. Fewer than 2,000 bottles made.

A special selection of Loureiro grapes from an old vines parcel. The wine is aged in used Puligny-Montrachet barrels which adds depth and character to the wine while preserving fruit and freshness. A very pronounced citrus character accompanies an excellent balance on the nose and palate. This year was a VERY low yield — only 926 bottles made!

10. Domaine Philippe Garrey – Bouzeron Les Clous 2018

a very fine example of this old native Burgundy cultivar (Aligoté). A current revival of this grape, spurred on by the efforts of the managing director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, a great fan of this grape. Bouzeron is the top location for Aligoté, and the only village to focus exclusively on it. Philippe has a small 0.5 ha parcel from which he makes this wine, partly vinified in ceramic. – lightly aromatic on the nose with pronounced minerality and freshness on the palate. A great complement to the legendary Chardonnays of the region. About 3,000 bottles made.

11. Château Valandraud – Virginie de Valandraud Blanc 2016

a blend of 50% Sémillon, 40% Sauvignon Blanc, and 10% Sauvignon Gris. The label humbly says AOC Bordeaux Blanc, as white grapes are not permitted under AOC St Emilion. But this is a serious white wine from Jean-Luc Thunevin, Le Bad Boy of St Emilion, made in only limited quantities. A nose of citrus, flowers, and candied elements gives way to a palate of juicy fruit balanced by good acidity, A very enjoyable and appetizing medium-bodied wine, not to be missed.

this Viognier originates in vine clippings from Condrieu planted by the proprietor (Louis Fabre) some 35 years ago.- from the 2019 vintage they decided to make a small amount of orange wine from these grapes (2000 bottles total). 2019 was the first year it was released.- For me, a very interesting and versatile wine. One of the best wines with sushi, as it lives somewhere between a full bodied white and a light red. I have also tried it with various types of spicy Asian food (for example Korean-style yakiniku and ma po dou fu). It works! Amazing!

A fairly spicy nose with a palate that expresses spice and cherry notes, it is an excellent match for a broad selection of Mediterranean cuisines.

Intense nose featuring spices and floral aromas gives way to a rich and long palate with black fruits, spices, and complex tannins. Aging potential: 10+ years. Only 3,300 bottles produced.

top quality sweet white Bordeaux wines from a legendary Sauternes producer. Several years ago this estate was acquired by the group that owns Lalique crystal, and bottles since 2013 feature the iconic René Lalique ‘Femme et Raisins’ design from 1928. Designed to highlight the interplay between light, glass, and the golden liquid inside, they are really quite beautiful.
the new owners have reduced yields for the grand vin substantially, to bring it closer to its historical quality standard next to its neighbor Château d’Yquem. Recent vintages have also been made with great freshness, to be consumed younger or after long ageing at the consumer’s preference. We have both the 2005 in the traditional style and the even more luscious 2015 and 2016, which are exceptionally fine drinking.

This is the second wine of Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey and we recommend it highly for value! As the chateau reduces production of its top wine, better and better grapes make their way into the second wine. It really is very good!
